Upstage AI Talk Event Recap: Where AI experts gather to shape the future

At Upstage, we are dedicated to fostering a vibrant ecosystem for large language models (LLMs). We have pursued it every step of the way to shape the future of artificial general intelligence for work. From June to September, we had the pleasure of hosting two sessions of the "Upstage AI Talk" in Seoul, in partnership with SBVA, a prominent global venture capital firm.

These two sessions brought together over 300 attendees from AI startups and developers. From thought-provoking discussions to panel talks with Q&A sessions, lively discussions took place between the keynote speakers and attendees. Through these, speakers and attendees were able to share valuable insights into LLMs and delve into the future of artificial intelligence.

  • Richard Socher: Founder and CEO of you.com, the first chat-search assistant / Known for his work on ImageNet(A large-scale hierarchical image database) and GloVe(Global Vectors for Word Representation)

  • Sung Kim: Co-Founder and CEO of Upstage / Associate Professor on leave from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology since September 2022 / Former Head of Artificial Intelligence at Clova AI

• Session 2 (11/09/24)

  • Kyunghyun Cho: Ph.D., Professor of Computer Science and Data Science, New York University / CIFAR Fellow of Learning in Machines & Brains / Renowned AI expert for ‘Neural machine translation.’

His keynote on "Solar: The Best Fine-Tunable LLM" delved into Upstage's groundbreaking work on large language models (LLMs) and the capabilities of Solar Mini to solve business problems with super-human level intelligence, presenting various real-world industry use cases.

• Session 2

  • Hwalsuk Lee discussed the latest B2B innovations using LLMs: Harnessing Fullstack LLMs and RAG Pipelines with Language Expansion. He provided real-world examples, including automating insurance claims and digitizing all of the enterprise's unstructured data for work. OCR (Optical Character Recognition), Information Extraction and Document Parse (Layout Analyzer) were mentioned as a key solution for industries to handle large volumes of paper documents, converting them into a machine-readable format (Key-Value). Depth Upscaling (DUS), the design concept of Solar LLM, was presented as a method for scaling LLMs, resulting in a 5x improvement in cost and time reduction during pre-training. **‘Solar Pro Preview’** was introduced as the most intelligent LLM optimized for single GPU performance, which garnered significant attention.

  • Professor KyungHyun Cho’s session encouraged us to think deeply about what to keep in mind when using LLMs. He highlighted the importance of transparency in models, stating that the person using the model should properly formulate hypotheses, check, and validate how the data was used and how the training was conducted. His insightful presentation delved into the latest advancements in natural language processing and the implications for the future of artificial intelligence and also share valuable insights on training language models from the ground up.
