Upstage Partners with Chosun Ilbo for AI-powered Journalism

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Feb. 3, 2025— Upstage announced today that it has signed a joint agreement with Chosun Ilbo, the largest and most influential newspaper in Seoul. This partnership marks the first time in South Korea that a leading AI company and a major media organization will jointly develop and deploy media-specialized AI solutions for commercial use.

Through this partnership, Chosun Ilbo plans to become the first Korean media outlet to integrate AI throughout its entire newspaper and digital news production processes. Upstage will develop media-specific AI services powered by its proprietary large language model (LLM), SOLAR, while Chosun Ilbo will provide an extensive dataset that includes over 4.1 million articles spanning 105 years, a database of 350,000 individuals, and a wealth of English and Japanese news articles to support model training.

"With over 105 years of journalistic history, Chosun Ilbo’s data is an unparalleled treasure in both scale and credibility,"said Sung Kim, CEO of Upstage. "By combining this rich repository of high-quality articles with Upstage’s cutting-edge AI technology, we will create groundbreaking AI services that will not only transform the future of media in South Korea but set new standards globally."

The first outcome of this collaboration will be the launch of “Proofreading AI” in the first half of this year. This AI-powered tool is designed to automatically detect errors in text, significantly enhancing grammar, word choice, and sentence structure. It can identify typos with over 95% accuracy, suggest improvements to awkward phrasing, recommend contextually appropriate vocabulary, and ensure consistency in style and tone across articles. Additionally, it can detect redundant expressions, optimize sentence flow for better readability, and even flag potential factual inconsistencies when cross-referenced with trusted data sources.

By streamlining the editorial process, Proofreading AI helps journalists and editors focus more on content quality and storytelling, reducing the time spent on manual revisions. Its applications are expected to extend beyond media organizations to publishers, government agencies, public institutions, research institutes, and corporations facing a shortage of proofreading resources.

Looking ahead, Upstage and Chosun Ilbo plan to co-develop a range of AI-driven media solutions. These include automated article translation, advanced information search powered by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI-enabled news fact-checking, and automated article generation based on editorial briefs.
